I took a 7 week coast to coast road trip after being laid off from Boeing. I didn’t have a camper but realized that being able to pull off the road at a rest or truck stop was the way to go to make the trip affordable. With a few sheets of 1/2” plywood and misc. hardware this is what I came up with. The effort was well worth the time and materials.

Rather, we treat it as if it’s a past event, forever finished. And of course, it is finished; it’s finished like a wedding ceremony is finished. The event is over. But the event itself continually reorients us and redirects our reality. It makes everything different, and therefore it lives on and demands we live into the new reality it’s ushered in. Yet too often we treat the crucifixion like a birthday party. We’ve received some nice gifts, but it’s now past and makes no real demand on the way we live into the next year.”

-
Andrew Root

As hippy and stereotypical as it sounds, I love being in nature. Now, I don’t think I’ve discovered this about myself until my recent years in living on the West side of Michigan- there’s so much to DO. And so much to take advantage of that a lot of states don’t have…like Indiana. What do they have? Exactly. I don’t know.

I’m kidding, Indiana is awesome and has big wind mills. Everything has beauty. Just…Michigan is better.

As I was hiking with my good friend Tim yesterday in Ludington State Park- I just felt at home. Back to the way things should be, not in a subliminal emo way, but in terms of the creation of the world…yeah, I meant it that largely. Just the two of us carrying what we needed for the day, both in food and in clothing- nothing more. Under the shade of trees that kept the rain from coming down on us- a natural rooftop. And what we did? We just looked. And watched. Took in. Marveled. I felt that the more details that I payed attention to and appreciated- the more I felt God. Plain as that. I felt him, I saw Him, and the details that He incorporates into every stinking thing.

It was as if the nature around was a love letter: just like a love letter has different words, different topics, different tempos, different feelings poured into the overall message- I felt the same way about the different sceneries, different species, different climates, different colors- they formed a love letter written in sign language. That was addressed to us. As if God was saying through this love letter “Look at how much I can DO! Look at how much I pay attention! Look! It’s for you!” It was a continual cadence, both seen and heard.

It was a pull away from the mundane that infiltrates our minds without our awareness. I truly believe, in nature, we return to square 1. Where the most joy, and the most reality, is experienced.

Ludington State Park

God seems to like to work that way. It makes things interesting, I guess…not always the way I want it, but the answer is always delivered with somewhat of a Devine “I told you so….!” (winky face).

I find that I really like that word. “Interesting”. What does that word really mean? I feel like it has a shade of both black and white to it. It’s a optimistic person’s way of saying something is neither “good”, nor “bad”. Because when you want something to be strictly defined as “good” or “bad”, you put one of those harsh labels on it right away. Instead, I think the word “interesting” is a way for somebody with an adventurous spirit…kind of like “hm. it went that way. okay”. Observing how it happened. You don’t know where it’s going to go next, but you’re content to sit back and watch it unfold. Curious. Interesting. I feel like if you get into the habit of describing the happenings in your life as “interesting” more often, you are ultimately saying that you’re not in control, and that is perfectly fine.

"The Gospel isn’t spread by experts explaining their knowledge, but by converts celebrating the..."

“The Gospel isn’t spread by experts explaining their knowledge, but by converts celebrating the treasure that they own.”

- Matthew Westerholm

Photo

I think he was born to be fabulous.

I think he was born to be fabulous.

Video

Photo

Aw, cute dude.

Aw, cute dude.

Nigel Cabourn - Ventile Aircraft Jacket
